Why Puzzles Work (According to Science!)

The brain loves patterns. When students complete puzzles, they’re using multiple areas of the brain at once—critical thinking, problem-solving, memory recall, and even a bit of creativity.

 

 

According to cognitive research, this kind of active retrieval helps embed knowledge into long-term memory far more effectively than passive note-taking.

 

 

Plus, there’s the bonus of dopamine—every time a piece fits, the brain rewards itself with a hit of feel-good motivation.

Each puzzle includes 16 CNA-related review questions.

 

 

Every correct answer earns a piece of the puzzle.

 

 

Once students “earn” their pieces, they attempt to put the puzzle together revealing the secret image.

 

 

By the end, students have both a completed puzzle and a solid review of critical concepts.

 

Pro Tip:  Cut the puzzle pieces out ahead of time and place the pieces in a baggie.  Then, remove pieces for incorrect questions before giving the students the remaining pieces.

Option 1: Independent Work

Students love the satisfaction of seeing the puzzle image reveal itself as they answer correctly.

 

These are perfect for independent review, especially when:

 

  • You need a meaningful, quiet assignment for early finishers

  • A student is absent and needs a low-pressure catch-up activity

  • You want to assign a fun, review-type homework task

 

Option 2: Small Group Activity or Centers

Want to add some collaboration and competition to your class?

 

 

Set up the Mystery Puzzles in rotating “centers” or assign several groups of students the same puzzle in a “small group activity”.

Light Up Your CNA or PCT Classroom with Centers: DIY Style

 

 

Here’s how:

 

 

  • Divide students into small teams of 2–4

  • Give each team a puzzle or rotate every 7-10 minutes if using “centers”

  • Let them work together to solve each question, check answers, and build the puzzle

Students build communication skills, reinforce content, and stay highly engaged—no tech or fancy equipment needed!

 

 

Pro Tip:  If using puzzle for a small group activity, make it a fun competition with the first group to complete the puzzle correctly wins!

DIY Puzzle Acitivity

Create your own DIY Puzzle Center using real store-bought puzzles!

 

How It Works:

 

  1. Buy a puzzle with a moderate number of pieces (16-25 is ideal for a class period).

  2. Create the same number of review questions on a CNA  or PCT topic you’ve just taught—think infection control, fluid intake math, vital signs, etc.

  3. Students earn one puzzle piece per correct answer.

  4. Once they’ve answered enough questions, they try to assemble the puzzle and guess the image—which could be a silly animal, a healthcare-themed scene, or even a famous person in scrubs!

Pro Tip:  I have used “large piece” puzzles from Amazon like the picture below.
