As Nurse Aide instructors, we’re always looking for effective, engaging tools to enhance student learning and assessment of understanding. One tool that’s often overlooked but incredibly versatile is the “mini white board”.
These simple, cost-effective teaching aids consist of a sheet of copy paper inserted into a page protector, paired with a dry erase marker and a paper towel for erasing…yep…that’s it.
But oh the things they can do!
Here are some creative ways you can incorporate mini white boards into your Nurse Aide Training Program:
1. Assessing Comprehension
Mini-white boards are a great way to quickly check how well students grasp the material.
For example, during a lesson on infection control, you might ask the group, “What link in the chain of infection would sneezing be?”
Students write their answers on their boards and hold them up, giving you an immediate sense of who understands the concept and who might need extra help.
This is great for those students who are reluctant to ask for help. They don’t feel so “put on the spot”.
2. Reviewing Missed Skill Steps
This is one of my favorite ways to use mini-white boards with my students.
One of the challenges in Nurse Aide Training is ensuring students remember their steps during skills demonstrations.
After observing ME demonstrating a skill (e.g., transferring a patient), I ask students to write down any steps they think were missed (I always make sure I miss steps like “locking bed brakes” or “applying non-skid shoes”).
The students write down the missed steps on their mini-white boards and show me what they wrote.
This encourages attention to detail and reinforces critical safety practices.
3. Quick Quiz Sessions
Mini-white boards are perfect for lesson reviews!
Use mini-white boards for rapid-fire quiz sessions at the end of class to reinforce the day’s lessons.
You can ask simple yes/no questions or, for instance: “True or false: Gloves are required when providing perineal care.”
Students can write their responses quickly and share them, turning the quiz into a fun, interactive activity.
4. Charting Practice
I have used mini-white boards for students to practice charting vital signs.
Give students a brief resident scenario of obtaining vital signs, and have them practice charting them correctly on their mini-white boards.
Sometimes students have difficulty charting vitals signs with all the symbols and abbreviations they need to remember.
This really helps!
5. Skill Recall Games
Mini-white boards can also be used to play recall games.
Give students a skill to think about. Have them write the correct sequence of steps on their white boards.
For instance, ask them to write the steps for dressing with an affected side or donning PPE (two good ones), and then compare answers.
This technique is particularly effective for reinforcing memory of multi-step procedures.
